Is the Loss Prevention Community doing enough for Training and Background Checks?

On Friday I questioned why most States have no required training for LP Detectives but, they do for uniform security guards.  As a result, LP Detectives can enter the field with no training or background checks in many cases.  Absent any State requirements, are the hiring managers in Loss Prevention doing enough?

Your largest companies like Sears or Walmart have very strict hiring policies.  Most have adopted  background checks and many require drug tests for LP Detectives.  They however, often hire folks without any formal training or experience in the Loss Prevention field.   This allows interested applicants to enter the field with no experience and the retailer can keep their payroll costs down with inexperienced  LP Detectives.

Mid sized and smaller retail companies vary widely on these background checks and often the expense takes precedent over the need. When it comes to formal training, many have no program or are still using the old VCR tapes and a manual.  These in-house training programs are expensive to manage and are costly due to travel and payroll costs.

Would it add value to the position if all new applicants interviewed had the basic training and background checks in place before they applied? That was the thought behind the on line training at www.LPDetective.com. Provide a consistent training program that details the position basics that will help them succeed in their new position.

I think we all agree that a complete background check and in most situations a drug test should be mandatory.  It is up to each hiring manager in Loss Prevention to require these standards.  Tomorrow I will cover the basics for a well defined training program for the LP Detective position.
